You don't need to be fluent in Vietnamese to have a better trip to Vietnam. You need about 50 phrases, learned well enough to use them without thinking.
The difference between a tourist who points at a menu and one who says "Cho tôi một phở bò" is enormous — not in fluency, but in how people respond to you. Vietnamese people light up when a foreigner speaks even a few words of their language. Doors open. Prices get friendlier. Conversations happen that wouldn't otherwise.
This guide gives you the 50 most useful phrases for traveling in Vietnam, organized by the situations where you'll actually need them. Every phrase includes Southern Vietnamese pronunciation — the dialect spoken in Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, and most of southern Vietnam, which is where the majority of tourists spend their time. Where Southern pronunciation differs from Northern, we note it.
A quick note on pronunciation guides: we use simplified English approximations in parentheses. These won't make you sound native, but they'll get you understood. For proper tone practice, nothing beats hearing the phrases spoken — which is why each phrase is the kind you can practice inside a tool like LingViet, where you hear Southern Vietnamese audio and can save any word to your vocabulary deck.
The Essentials (Use These Every Day)
These are your survival phrases. Memorize these before anything else.
1. Xin chào — Hello
(sin chow)
The universal greeting. Works for everyone in every situation. In casual Southern speech, many people just say "Chào" followed by the appropriate pronoun, but "Xin chào" is always safe.
2. Cảm ơn — Thank you
(gahm uhn)
You'll use this dozens of times a day. Southern pronunciation softens the "c" closer to a "g" sound. Add "nhiều" (nyee-oo) at the end for "thank you very much": Cảm ơn nhiều.
3. Xin lỗi — Sorry / Excuse me
(sin loy)
Use this to apologize, get someone's attention, or squeeze past people. Double-duty phrase.
4. Vâng / Dạ — Yes
(vuhng / yah)
"Dạ" (yah) is the Southern way to say yes and is used constantly. It's polite and respectful — you'll hear it everywhere in Saigon.
5. Không — No
(kohm)
In the South, the final "ng" is softened and almost sounds like an "m." Listen for it and you'll hear it everywhere.
6. Tôi không hiểu — I don't understand
(toy kohm hee-oo)
Possibly your most honest phrase. Pair it with an apologetic smile.

Tips for Using These Phrases in Vietnam
Don't worry about perfect tones. Context and body language carry you further than you think. If you say "phở" with a slightly wrong tone at a phở restaurant, they'll figure it out. The effort matters more than the precision.
Smile when you speak. Vietnamese culture values warmth and friendliness. A smile paired with any attempt at Vietnamese transforms the interaction.
Learn "Em ơi!" (em oy!) for getting a server's attention. It's not rude — it's how everyone does it. Literally translates to calling out to a younger person, and it's the standard way to flag down waitstaff.
Prices are in thousands. When someone says "Năm mươi" they probably mean 50,000 VND, not 50. Get comfortable with the currency before you start bargaining.
Southern Vietnamese sounds different from what apps teach. Most language apps default to Northern (Hanoi) Vietnamese. If you're traveling to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Nha Trang, or anywhere south of Huế, the pronunciation you hear on the street will sound different from what Duolingo taught you. The phrases in this guide use Southern pronunciations because that's what you'll actually encounter.
